Handheld Ends 14 Year Hiatus, Debuts New Single; Announces New LP Specs

March 16 — Skatepunk band Handheld returned from a 14 year hiatus this week, and announced it will release a new album this summer.

The band announced Wednesday, it will release its new album, A Canadian Tragedy June 14 through Thousand Islands Records. A record release show is planned to take place June 4 at Kitchener, ON. In anticipation of the record’s release, the band premiered the album’s lead single, ‘Bend The Iron‘ Wednesday.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Bend The Iron’ will appeal not only to fans of Handheld, but to those of skatepunk in general. The harmonies in the vocals, the tight guitar riffs and equally precise time keeping give the song that familiar sound akin to so many other skatepunk bands.

According to information presented in the news release announcing the band’s return, the song centers on the infamous Lac Megantic railroad tragedy of 2013. The tragedy happened July 6, 2013 in the town of Lac-Megantic, Quebec, Canada. An unattended 73 year-old Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway freight train carrying crude oil rolled down the tracks in the town and caught fire. Approximately 47 people died in the fire, which caused the deadliest non-passenger train crash in Canada’s history since the nation’s confederation in 1887.

The band talked about the story of the tragedy in a prepared statement.

“You’ve heard the story, bare minimum safety protocols, inadequate staffing, and corporate oversight leads to tragedy,” the statement reads. “Bend the iron tells the true tale of how the lack of attention caused one of the worst rail disasters in Canadian history, claiming the lives of over 45 residents and destroying a picturesque lake-side town in Quebec.”
