July 30 — Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell is scheduled to release his new solo album this fall.
The album, Brighten is scheduled for release Oct. 29. Pre-orders are open. It is Cantrell’s first new album in almost 20 years.
In anticipation of the album’s release, Cantrell premiered the video for the album’s lead single, ‘Atone’ Thursday through Rolling Stone magazine. The track listing for Brighten is noted below.
Brighten Track List
Prism of Doubt
Black Hearts and Evil Done
Had To Know
Nobody Breaks You
Cantrell said in a prepared statement, the song’s arrangement, which features clear AIC influence along with an equally clear southern rock sensibility, that there was direct influence in the song from a more well-known composer in the track’s creation.
“As a fan of Ennio Morricone scores and Sergio Leone movies, it’s got a bit of that outlaw vibe, with a cool psycho hillbilly stomp” he said. “It’s been kicking around in my head for like 20-plus years, haunting me. Sometimes it takes a while for a good idea to find its best form. Such was the case with Atone.”
No information is provided in the press release regarding the debut of Cantrell’s new single. In listening to the song through, it comes across as a statement from someone wanting to make right what was once wrong. It is that classic theme of battling personal demons for all intents and purposes.
The video for ‘Atone’ follows Cantrell’s noted respect for Sergio Leone movies. It finds him out in an arid, mountainous setting. The black and white video has the look of something one might expect from one of Leone’s old spaghetti westerns.
