Depeche Mode Premieres ‘Wagging Tongue’ Video

May 24 — Veteran rock band Depeche Mode premiered the video for its latest single this week.

The band premiered the video for its single, ‘Wagging Tongue‘ Wednesday. The song is featured in the band’s 2023 album, Memento Mori. The video tells the story of a couple that takes part in a ritual from their village involving confronting one another with complaints and concerns. The pair dunk their heads in the water, getting out their frustrations at the other in the ritual.

The visualization, it would seem, is a representation of how many couples might get their frustrations out but neither is really understanding and hearing the other. That is just this critic’s interpretation. This seems the case as the couple goes back to their house and go right back to the unhappiness that led them to take part in the ritual in the first place in the video’s end.

The musical arrangement featured in the song is familiar to audiences, what with its use of electronics, keyboards, and its distinctly melancholy mood.

No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the news release announcing the video’s debut. The lyrics provided with the video hint at someone being fed up with another person, telling that person that he/she will not bring the main subject down mentally and emotionally.

In other news, Depeche Mode is in the midst of a tour in support of its new album. The tour is making its way through Europe and the United Kingdom for its current leg. The band is scheduled to launch the North American leg of its tour Sept. 21 in Mexico City, Mexico. The North American leg of the tour is scheduled to end Dec. 12 in Los Angeles, CA.
