Oct. 17 — Ice Nine Kills’ two-year-long Horrorwood tale came to a supposed conclusion Tuesday when the band premiered its new single and video.
The band debuted its new single, ‘Meat & Greet‘ and its video Tuesday. The song and its video are a tribute to the 1991 Orion Pictures horror thriller, Silence of the Lambs. The movie starred Sir Anthony Hopkins as the demented cannibal killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Jodie Foster as FBI agent Clarice Starling, who is investigating Lecter’s horrible crimes.
INK front man Spencer Charnas takes on the role made famous by Hopkins in the video, which puts the band in the famous insane asylum scene while actress Nadia Teichmann takes on Foster’s role. As with so many INK videos, there is lots of bloodshed and event Charnas’ character actually trying to eat the flesh of one of the asylum’s officers and beating another to death with his baton.
The frenetic shots do cause some confusion in following the story, and the finale is just as much of a head scratcher as it leaves one wondering if at least one final chapter will happen since there are no actual directions to see the video’s supposed end. One is left to assume the link to the band’s fan club and the “INK tip line” are the ways people can find out what happens, which is a bit trite, as this is a marketing scheme that so many PR agencies would do for acts in days gone by.
Charnas even said in a statement that the new single and video are “the horrifying climax of our cinematic saga…at least for now.” This is its own nod to how so many horror movies leave themselves open ended for future sequels.
The musical arrangement featured in INK’s new single is everything audiences have come to expect from the band. The dark harmonies and Charnas’ haunting vocal delivery style is all there. The whole gives this creepy tune its own identity separate from the rest of the band’s works.
‘Meat & Great’ is featured in the newly released expanded version of Ice Nine Kills’ latest album, Welcome To Horrorwood, which is scheduled for release Friday. Pre-orders for the forthcoming vinyl re-issue are open.
