Oct. 11 — Jason Charles Miller has taken on a classic Iron Maiden song for his latest single.
Miller, the former front man of the industrial band Godhead, premiered his cover of Iron Maiden’s ‘Wasted Years’ through Golden Robot Records early this month.
Miller’s take on the song is a dramatic change of style and sound from its source material. Where Iron Maiden’s original composition is a steady, driving, mid-tempo composition, Miller’s take on the song leans is a much more melancholy, contemplative direction complete with subtle, flowing string arrangement. The deeper take on the song gives the song its own identity both in comparison to Iron Maiden’s take and from Miller’s own works while still utilizing his southern/country rock leaning to give the song that identity. The result is a work that is engaging and entertaining in its own right.
Miller talked about taking on the Iron Maiden classic in a prepared statement.
“‘Wasted Years’ is one of the most profound songs ever written about life on the road as a musician,” Miller said. “The lyrics have always touched me deeply, and I wanted to put my own spin on the loneliness one feels when listening to them. We shot the entire video in one shot, which takes an incredible amount of planning. Luckily director Andrew Fogel and our amazing steady cam operator, Allen Chen are experts in their craft! We put a few easter eggs on the walls, too. See if you can spot them!”
The video for Miller’s new single features him performing the cover under grey skies in an alleyway whose walls are covered in graffiti. Short grass grows under his feet as he sits and performs his new single.
In other news, Miller is scheduled to join Faster Pussycat on tour starting Oct. 31 in Chico, CA. The tour is scheduled to run through Nov. 28 in Tempe, AZ. Before the tour launches, Miller has a trio of solo dates coming up, two of which are in the United Kingdom and one in California. All of Miller’s upcoming tour dates are noted below:
