The evening started out with punk/metal band Child Bite opening up the night. They definitely had a pretty wild set to set the tone for the night. With lead singer Shawn Knight all over the stage in a frenzy belting out his snarling vocals. Also kicking a can or two of his Pabst Blue Ribbon beer out into the crowd with beer spraying out. The crowd definitely seemed to eat up the set as they had a good mosh pit going.
Next up was long time heavy metal band Lamb Of God. They had another aggressive set for the fans and with the amount of Lamb Of God shirts I seen among the audience, their fans definitely came in droves. Singer Randy Blythe was all over the stage belting out his guttural vocals. Jumping off the drum riser and spraying water straight up put of his mouth a couple times. The band played for about an hour and included a lot of their early fan favorites in the set. Lamb Of God concluded their set with the song “Redneck” which was dedicated to the Abbott brothers.
Next up was the headliners Pantera. Before they took the stage a huge curtain was up covering the view of the stage. All of the sudden Zakk Wylde came running out from side stage wearing a silly mask over his eyes and went up by the front barricade taking photos with those in the front row. Which made for a surprise. Once the lights went down a video played on two screens side stage. The video was of the Abbott brothers, showing short clips from their days with Pantera on the road and such. The video lasted about five minutes and after Pantera started to play the first song “A New Level”, the curtain dropped. Pantera is definitely one of those bands I never thought I’d of had the opportunity to see live. From the breakup in 2003 to the passing of Dimebag Darrell and then his brother Vinnie Paul. But once I heard they were getting back together with the help of Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante I was definitely excited to see these guys. Even if it’s not quite the same without the Abbott brothers. The band definitely sounded great though and the fans were loving the opportunity to see and enjoy them live once again. Fans were moshing and headbanging through the almost hour and a half set. Phil Anselmo said at one point that all songs were dedicated to Dimebag and Vinnie. Along with the opening video and more video highlights of the Abbott Brothers during the song “Flood” it was definitely a celebration of the brothers who are no longer with us. Charlie Benante’s bass drums also had a photo of Vinnie and Dimebag on them.
When Pantera was done playing “Floods” Phil Anselmo talked about when they’re opening for Metallica there are a lot of people that have no idea who they even are until they play this next song. The next song is definitely a long time favorite of mine “Walk” which the crowd was totally excited to hear and definitely had a lot more crowd participation. Pantera is definitely a great live band to see. Some of my favorites from the set were of course “Walk”, then “Mouth For War”, “This Love”, “Five Minutes Alone”, “I’m Broken”, and “Cowboys From Hell”. If you can’t make the last few dates of this second leg of the tour try and catch them on the road with Metallica.
