New Line Cinema’s 1998 science fiction/noir/horror thriller Dark City will get new life on 4K UHD and Blu-ray this summer.

Arrow Video announced Friday, the movie is scheduled for release June 24 on both formats. The upcoming re-issue will be the first time ever that it has been released on 4K UHD. Both releases will present the movie in its original theatrical release as well as a separate director’s cut in a new 4K restoration from the original 35 mm negatives approved by the movie’s director of photography, Dariusz Wolski.

In Dark City, John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell — The IllusionistA Knight’s TaleTristan + Isolde) wakes up in a hotel bathtub with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Making or more tention is a dead body alying next to the tub. He has no idea what to make of the situation. Suddenly a phone rings and the caller (Keifer Sutherland — The Lost BoysPhone BoothMelancholia) is on the other end. He tells John to get out of the hotel immediately John also faces threats from another source, the ominous strangers in black who just want him to go to sleep like everyone else in the city. The whole is a unique take on the classic noir film that couples with elements of horror and science fiction that has maintained the movie as a cult favorite among audiences for nearly three decades.

Included as extras in the forthcoming re-issue of Dark City is a 60-page booklet with new writing from author Richard Kadrey, film critis Sabrina Stent, Virat Nehru, and Martyn Pedler. Additionally there is a double-sided poster as another extra. Also, new feature-length audio commentaries from director Alex Proyas, as well as from Craig Anderson, Bruce Isaacs, and Herschel Isaacs. Ther eare also archival commentaries from Proyas, late great film critic Roger Ebert, and writers Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer.

That is all just the tip of the iceberg. A new hour-long documentary focused on the movie’s creation features interviews with Proyas, producer Andrew Mason, production designers Patrick Tatopoulos and George Little, costume designer Liz Keough, and storyboard artist Peter Pound.
