Michael J. Fox, the star of the timeless (no pun intended) Back To The Future movie franchise, wants to find the guitar he used in the series’ first movie.
According to a news release distributed Tuesday, the actor has partered with Gibson Guitars to search for the cherry red Gibson ES-345, which has been missing for some four decades. The guitar in question was used by Fox during the “Enchantment Under The Sea” dance scene in the classic 1985 movie.
Fox addressed the guitar and his surprise at his influence in the movie in a prepared statement.
“Guitar has always been a big part of my life,” said Fox. “When we talked about the ‘Enchantment Under The Sea’ scene in Back to the Future, I sat down with the cinematographer and choreographer and said I want to riff through all of my favorite guitarists, like doing Jimi Hendrix behind the head, Pete Townshend doing a windmill, and the Eddie (Van Halen) hammer thing, it was so cool that they were open to that, and we laid it all out there.”
He continued, “I’m really happy with the scene because it was an expression of my love for guitar and all the great players. I didn’t realize the influence the scene had on people, John Mayer said, ‘I play guitar because of you,’ and Chris Martin said the same thing, and I am glad they took it further than I did, they went to the trouble of being really good players. I just love the guitar, and I love the movie.”
Bob Gale, Back To The Future co-creator/screenwriter/producer, expanded on Fox’s statement with his own comments.
“Years ago, I was astonished to learn this beloved cinematic artifact had apparently disappeared into the space-time continuum,” Gale said. ““Since we don’t have a functioning time machine, this effort is probably our best chance to solve a decades-long mystery.”
According to the noted news release, the creative heads behind the movie’s 1989 sequel searched for the guitar in question during the movie’s creation but were unable to find the instrument. Now fans have the chance to help search for the guitar, according to the document.
Anyone with information about the guitar’s whereabouts can contact Gibson online at Lost ToTheFuture.com and by phone at 1-855-345-1955.
In an added effort to find the guitar, a new documentary, Lost To The Future, from Gibson Films, is in production. The documentary will feature interviews with Fox, co-stars Christopher Lloyd, Leah Thompson, and Harry Waters, Jr. Additionally, Gale and equally famed musician Huey Lewis will be featured in the forthcoming documentary.
