Nov. 29 — Scott Stapp recently unveiled another preview of his forthcoming album, Higher Power.
The preview came in the form of his new single, ‘Black Butterfly‘ and the song’s companion lyric video. The song and its video are the third from the album, which is scheduled for release March 15 through Napalm Records. It was most recently preceded by the premiere of the record’s second single, ‘What I Deserve,’ and the song’s companion lyric video. That song’s premiere followed that of the album’s title track/lead single.
The musical arrangement featured in ‘Black Butterfly’ continues the trend of heaviness already exhibited in each of its predecessors. The rich guitar line helps to create a deeply contemplative mood, which helps to illustrate the song’s somewhat existential lyrical theme. Meanwhile the song’s production ensures the song’s rhythm section offers audiences just as much of a punch.
According to Stapp the song’s lyrical theme is meant to address looking backward and forward in life at the same time.
“Growth is a challenging process,” Stapp said. “I often write aspirational lyrics about getting to that ‘next level’ – knowing what you’re capable of and rejecting the idea that you’re defined by your mistakes. Overcoming difficulty can lead to increased self-awareness and, in time, wisdom that can lead to helping others going through similar situations.”
The lyric video features the song’s lyrics placed over the album’s artwork as the song plays over the simple visualization.
