Nov. 30 — As the clock tickets to the release of Alkaline Trio’s new album, Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, early next year, the band has given audiences another preview of the record.
The preview came recently in the form if the album’s second single, ‘Bad Time‘ and the song’s companion video. The debut of the new single and video came more than a month after the band unveiled the album’s lead single/title track and the song’s video.
The musical arrangement featured in the band’s new single is a stylistic change from its predecessor. Where the album’s lead single/title track is a distinct pop punk style composition, the new single takes the album in a more pop rock direction. Though, there is still a subtle pop punk leaning with the slightest comparison to works from the likes of Blink-182 possible.
Front man Mat Skiba offered some interesting insight into the story behind the new story in an in-depth commentary.
“‘Bad Time’ was initially inspired by a friend and crush who happened to call me while I was on tour in El Paso TX as an active shooter situation was happening just across from where we were staying,” Skiba said. “We could hear gunshots and sirens as the situation escalated. My friend asked if it was a bad time to talk, and I said no — I really wanted to speak with her. It was actually a terrible and terrifying time, but it was never a bad time to hear her voice. The second verse goes back to a time in Chicago when my roommate Bobby and I were almost killed in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting — high as kites on mushrooms. We lived in a neighborhood run by Latin Kings at the time of the shooting, so I reference those facts as well as how nice it would have been to hear from the same girl back then.”
The video for Alkaline Trio’s new single is a relatively simple presentation that takes a familiar approach. It features the band performing its new single on a dressed up sound stage meant to look like a live setting of sorts. The song plays over the visualization that also includes video of a woman dancing.
