Aug. 2 — Independent rock band The Stone Eye kicked off the weekend by announcing plans to release a new record.
The band announced Friday, it is planning to release its new EP, The Cart Sessions Aug. 9. The record features four songs, according to information in a news release distributed Friday. The EP includes the band’s latest single, ‘Charlie The Stingray‘ as well as its most recent predecessor, ‘Raindrops.‘
The band debuted its new single and video Friday. The song’s musical arrangement is something of a departure for the band. Instead of the more Tool-esque compositions that the band has formed for existing works, this song is more of a psychedelic-stoner rock type of arrangement.
Band member Stephen Burdick discussed the song’s composition at length in a prepared statement.
‘“Charlie the Stingray” was the first song we wrote as this current iteration of the band with our new members Jacob & Jonah, and it actually sat in limbo for a while before we made anything of it which is unusual for us,” Burdick said. “The main riff with the ascending blues pattern was composed about 2 months before anything else ever came of the song, as we were struggling to figure out where the song should go. In the end, after a few months of trying out different ideas we finally fell into the chorus that you hear on the recording, and then from there we slowly pieced everything together. It’s pretty cool though, as I feel the bulk of the song has a groove to it which cannot be found anywhere else in our discography, and the chorus has this chill melancholy vibe which is a nice juxtaposition when compared to our typical bombastic choruses.”‘
No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the news release. The lyrics presented in the new lyric video leave plenty of room for interpretation.
