June 21 — Independent hard rock act Bone Dagger gave audiences a new preview of its forthcoming EP this week.
The preview came in the form of the record’s new single, ‘Cycle of the Self.’ The song is the second single from the band’s forthcoming self-titled EP, which is scheduled for release Aug. 18. The band premiered the record’s lead single, ‘Filthy Machine‘, last month.
As with ‘Filthy Machine,’ the band’s new single boasts a distinct post-grunge sound in its arrangement, though there is something different in the general approach taken to this song. That difference is the hard rock leaning that is more prominent this time around. The balance of those two styles works well here to keep audiences engaged and entertained. At the same time, the Alice in Chains influence evidenced in ‘Filthy Machine’ is still evident in this song, too.
The band talked about the song’s existential lyrical theme in a prepared statement.
“This song is a testament to my tireless search for meaning, purpose, and placement within existence,” the statement reads. “I often find myself stalling during the day, thinking about what came before my time in this body, and inevitably what comes next. It certainly feels like I’ve been here a time or three. Surely, human life is not the end-all-be-all; there must be something more. Earth is a mess, and I am certainly not the only one who is hoping there are other dimensions where existence in solid form isn’t our only option for 80+ years of life.”
The statement continues, “The song is a soul-searcher, designed to bring awareness to the possibility of a cyclical, repetitive existence if we don’t learn from the mistakes of our previous lives. However, it’s curious that we usually cannot remember anything before our current form. ‘Cycle of the Self ‘is for the listener who needs more cognitive appeal in their music and enjoys their thoughts being provoked to entertain potentially absurd possibilities”.
