Aug. 3 — Rock collective A.D. 2020 is taking on a classic from War for its latest single.
The band premiered the video for its take on War’s timeless classic ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’ Sunday. The song and its video are the fourth from the band’s forthcoming album, Lockdown Diaries, which is scheduled for release Aug. 10. The band released the video for the album’s third single, ‘Ricochet’ June 29.
The video for the group’s take on ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’ was recorded separately by each musician — Mark McNelley (Lead Vocals), Melvin Brannon Jr. (Bass Guitar, Upright Bass, Harmonica, Vocals), Todd Thanhauser (Drums, Vocals), Dan Reed (Guitars, Keyboards, Vocals), Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Lead Guitar, Vocals), Greg Smith (Bass Guitar, Vocals) — around the world during the pandemic. The musicians’ parts were then assembled for the new video.
Thanhauser talked about how the song and video came together in a prepared statement.
“We discussed doing a remake of this song early in the conversations that lead to the A.D.2020 project,” he said. “I think the video is great because it shows us all during the lockdown playing and having fun and there are also some moments of humor and fantasy. It’s also a bit of a mantra we all live by “ Why Can’t We (All Just) Be Friends?” The world would be a better place if we could all be friends. “
Added Thanhauser, ”Our version of the song is the only song I can think of that has 6 lead vocal parts which also makes it a really unique cover. We hope the guys in WAR like the cover of their great song.”
A.D. 2020’s take on ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’ largely stays true to its source material. As Thanhauser noted in his comments, each member of the group gets his own chance to perform vocals. The difference in the original song and its updated take comes in the general stylistic approach. The group gives the song more of a classic rock vibe versus the fun/R&B influence evident in the original work.
