March 13 — Independent emo band Wakelee is scheduled to release its new self-titled album next month and in anticipation, debuted the album’s lead single and video Friday.
The band debuted its new single, ‘Tug of War‘ and its video Friday. The song’s musical arrangement is a catchy, upbeat composition that blends elements of 80s pop rock with more modern indie and emo pop leanings for a whole that is certain to keep listeners engaged and entertained.
Guitarist Alex Bulmer talked about the arrangement’s creation during a recent interview.
“We had the structure for this song since 2021, but it took so long to land a vocal melody,” Bulmer said. “We got so frustrated with it that we decided to get into a room together and loop the instrumental over and over again. We would then present our individual verse and chorus ideas to each other. We played the theme from Shark Tank as we did our pitches. It was ridiculous, but it turned out to be one of our favorite tracks from the album.”
No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the news release announcing the debut of the new single and video. No lyrics were provided with the song’s video, either.
The video features the band performing its new single in a rehearsal space that looks like an apartment setting. Bulmer said the band recorded the song’s video in its rehearsal space with an iPhone.
We wanted it to look like one continuous shot. It was really fun to make,” Bulmer said.
In other news, Wakelee is schedueld to host an album release concert April 15 at Mercury Lounge in New York, NY. Tickets for the concert are available here.
