Nov. 24 — Independent rock band Horizon Theory is taking on a Flobots classic for its latest single.
The band unveiled its take on Flobot’s classic single, ‘Handlebars‘ Thursday, and debuted a video for the single the same day. Horizon Theory’s cover largely stays true to its source material while also stepping up the song with a heavier nu-metal style sound and style. The blend of the source material with the updated heavier approach gives the song a unique identity in its new presentation.
Horizon Theory’s video for its cover also steps up Flobots’ original presentation. Where Flobots’ video for ‘Handlebars’ finds its main subject seeing so many negative things happening around him in his community — political corruptness, the capitalism, and misery of people around him — the updated take from Horizon Theory features footage of people fighting each other on Black Friday, footage of former President Donald Trump, footage of newscasts addressing tensions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and other violence across America and the world. This all plays out as the band performs its take on the song in a sound stage setting, at times wearing masks worn by members of Anonymous.
Guitarist Chris Black talked about the band’s take on the song in a prepared statement.
“We were all fans of this song years ago when it came out and after rediscovering it recently, we realized how relevant the song is to today and wanted to bring light to these lyrics once again,” Black said. “We thought it would be fun to put our twist on this song with some modern touches and create a new visualization to go with the lyrics.”
‘Handlebars’ is just the latest single released this year by Horizon Theory. The band debuted its single, ‘Darkness‘ and the song’s companion video in September. The premiere of the then new single and video came more than a month after the band debuted its then latest single, ‘Astronomer‘ and the song’s video.
The band debuted another single, ‘December‘ and the song’s companion video, in May.
