Jan. 5 — Alkaline Trio is giving audiences another preview of its forthcoming new album, Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs.
The band unveiled the album’s third single, ‘Versions of You‘ and its companion lyric video Friday. The premieres came Friday, almost a month after the band premiered the album’s then latest single, ‘Bad Time‘ and the song’s companion video. The premiere of that single and video came more than a month after the band unveiled the album’s lead single/title track and the song’s video.
Unlike its predecessors, ‘Versions of You’ is a more brooding style composition. At the same time, the pop punk styling that is just as present in the album’s two other singles is still prominent here as in those songs.
Bassist Dan Andriano talked about the composition’s creation in a prepared statement:
“From the start there was something really exciting about this one, a raw energy we didn’t want to let go,” Andriano said. “I was playing guitar and showing a part to (producer) Cameron (Webb), (guitarist/vocalist) Matt (Skiba) grabbed a bass and created this killer disjointed groove under what became the verse. It felt raw and ferocious, and we knew that’s what we had to capture, so that’s how we did it when the red light came on.”
According to Andriano, the song’s lyrical theme tackles the topic of a broken friendship.
“It’s a song about sorting through the rubble of a broken friendship and realizing there’s just nothing there to try and rebuild… that maybe the whole thing was artificial and driven by self-serving motives,” said Andriano.
The lyric video for the band’s new single features the song’s lyrics presented over various pieces of vintage footage. Meanwhile, the song plays over the visualization.
Blood, Hair and Eyeballs is scheduled for release Jan. 26 through Rise Records. Alkaline Trio recently announced a tour in support of the forthcoming record.
The tour is scheduled to launch Feb. 24 in Anaheim, CA and to run through March 30 in Las Vegas, NV. The nearly monthlong tour also includes performances in cities nationwide, such as Charlotte, NC; Cleveland, OH and Phoenix, AZ.
