The Dollyrots Takes On Billy Bragg’s ‘A New England,’ Announces New Tour Dates

March 19 — The Dollyrots have unveiled the latest single from its recently released album, Night Owls.

The new single came Tuesday in the form of the band’s cover of Billy Bragg’s ‘A New England.’ The song, whose lyric video is streaming here, is the closer from the album, which was released this winter through Wicked Cool Records and joins the likes of ‘Trees Sway,‘ ‘Can’t Tell You Why,’ ‘I Just Wanna Play Dead,’ ‘5+5,’ ‘Tonight With You,’ ‘Hot Mom With The Skinny Pants On,’ ‘Alligator,’ ‘When We’re Sober,‘ Hey Girl,’ and the album’s lead single/title track as singles from the 13-song record.

In regard to its musical arrangement, The Dollyrots stays true to its source material as it works to maintain the minimalist approach that Bragg took on his original composition.  This rendition is minimalist in its approach but still has the band’s trademark pop punk approach and sound what with the use of the keyboards and more pumped up production and instrumentation.  Lyrically, the band turns the tables, with front woman Kelly Ogden singing the song from the vantage point of a woman singing to a man instead of Bragg singing to a woman in his original work.

Ogden talked about the subtle changes made to the band’s take on Bragg’s song in a prepared statement.

“We’ve got a thing about wishing on stars; it’s been a reoccurring theme in our music since the start,” Ogden said. ‘A New England’ is, in our opinion, the greatest song ever written that mentions wishing on something in the sky. We wanted to make our version give a nod to Kirsty MacColl too, so this one includes the extra lyrics from hers. Because there’s never any shame in making a cover of a cover – if the originals are THAT good!”

In other news, The Dollyrots is scheduled to join Diesel Boy and Go Betty Go this summer for a brief West Coast run scheduled to start June 14 in Seattle, WA and to run through June 23 in San Diego, CA. The tour includes a number of other dates across California, Oregon, and Washington.
