Metallica Launches Second Annual Marching Band Competition

June 6 — Metallica and marching bands would not seem to go together, but for the second consecutive year, Metallica is asking bands nationwide to take on its music.

The band announced Thursday though a news release, it kicked off its “Metallica Marching Band Competition” Thursday. The inaugural competition saw collectively, almost 500 colleges and high schools nationwide take part in the contest. The contest is being presented by Metallica in partner with music instrument retailer Sweetwater.

In the college level competition, bands will compete in three divisions: Division 1, 2 and 3. The high school competition will also be divided into three division: Large, Medium, and Small. This year’s competition will once again feature the “Fan Favorite Award,” which is chosen by popular vote . Voting for the Fan Favorite Award opens Dec. 1 and ends Dec. 31.

Bands will have access to free sheet music of 13 Metallica songs for the contest. Winners will be announced in January 2025.

Bands that win in their respective categories will receive instruments and other gear for their respective schools’ music programs provided in part by Metallica, Sweetwater, Tama and other sponsors who will be named later.
