Arrow Video Announces Details For “The Mexico Trilogy” Re-Issue

July 18 — Acclaimed director Robert Rodriguez’s famed “Mexico Trilogy” is scheduled for re-issue next month on 4K UHD.

The trilogy, which is composed of El MariachiDesperado, and One Upon a Time in Mexico is scheduled for release Aug. 27 on a 4-disc 4K UHD/Blu-ray box set. The trilogy opened in 1992 with El Mariachi. Carlos Gallardo plays the title role, a lowly musician who is mistaken for an assassin and hunted by a gang looking to take him out. It’s up to him to protect himself from the gang’s attacks.

The movie’s Blu-ray presentation includes a brand-new feature-length audio commentary and a new interview with Robert Rodriguez. Additionally, a new featurette focused on the movie’s music is also included alongside a piece focusing on the movie’s creation, a TV spot, and theatrical trailer for the movie.

Antonio Banders (The Mask of ZorroThe Legend of ZorroThe Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water) took on the lead role in the trilogy’s second movie, Desperado while Gallardo would go on to work alongside Rodriguez on that movie and the trilogy’s third movie.

In Desperado, the now infamous El Mariachi is hunting the man who shot and wounded him and his wife. He is aided in his search by a bookstore owner named Carolina (Salma Hayek — From Dusk Till DawnDogmaWild Wild West) and con man interestingly named Buscemi (Steve Buscemi — Monsters Inc.Big FishHotel Transylvania 1-4).

Presented in 4K UHD, the forthcoming re-issue of Desperado will include as bonus content, a new interview with Rodriguez, an feature-length audio commentary, film discussion by filmmaker Gareth Evans (The Raid), a making of featurette and more.

Once Upon a Time (2003) closed out the “Mexico Trilogy.” In this finale, Banderas reprises his role as the Mariachi as he is hired by the CIA to assassinate the Mexican general who killed Carolina during a coup. Mariachi is hired more specifically by CIA agent Sands (Johnny Depp — the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, ChocolatEdward Scissorhands) to kill the general. The movie also stars a whos’ who list of stars, such as singer Enrique Iglesias, Danny Trejo (Big City Greens, MacheteFrom Dusk Till Dawn), Willem Dafoe (SpidermanSpiderman: No Way HomeFlight of the Intruder), and Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2The WrestlerSin City).

The movie’s Blu-ray presentation features a new feature-length audio commentary, deleted scenes with commentary by Rodriguez, a new interview with Rodriguez, and an archived featurette showing how to cook one of the movie’s key dishes.

The collection will also feature as extras, double-sided posters for each movie, reversible sleeves for each movie, and a poster for featuring Rodriguez’s original concept art for El Mariachi. The set will retail for MSRP of $99.95.
