Rock outfit Dropsonic offered audiences a new preview of its forthcoming self-titled album this week.
The preview came Wednesday in the form of the album’s new single, ‘So Long.’ The song is the second single from the album behind the ‘Honeytrap,’ which the band premiered in late March. The musical arrangement featured in ‘So Long’ is a clear change of sound and style from ‘Honeytrap.’ Where ‘Honeytrap’ has a clear garage punk stylistic approach that does eventually lead into something a fuzzed stoner approach late in its nearly 4-minute run time, ‘So Long’ walks the line of stoner rock, modern, and classic rock. That diversity in sound and styles gives audiences already reason to be interested in Dropsonic, which is scheduled for release May 16 through Spartan Records.
Front man Dan Dixon talked about the arrangement featured in ‘So Long’ in a prepared statement.
‘So Long’ was the first riff I wrote for this record… it has the feel of something that could’ve fit on any of our last 3 or 4 albums, until the sweet sounds of a 70’s synthesizer and a slide guitar solo kick in…,” he said.
No information was provided about the lyrical theme featured in the band’s new single, though according to information in the news release announcing the debut of the new song, the album’s lyrical themes in general take on the topics of “desperation, love, addiction, narcissism, and money.”
Dropsonic was produced by Alice in Chains front man William DuVall. Dixon spoke highly of DuVall as he talked about the singer/musician’s role in the album’s creation.
“William has been a longtime friend who understands what Dropsonic is about,” said Dixon. “His opinion is one I fully trust, and when I needed an outside perspective, he was the first person I called. He was the perfect advisor throughout this process and even added his backup vocals on ‘Honeytrap.’”
DuVall shared Dixon’s warm words as he talked about working with the band.
“Dan had been sending me works-in-progress to get my feedback, but the real joy came from watching Dan work and being a part of the recording process,” DuVall said. “Dropsonic is simply one of the best rock bands to come out of America in the last thirty years.”
Dropsonic will be Dropsonic’s seventh album and its first since the release of its 2010 album, VI. The band disbanded in 2011, with Dixon focusing on other projects, including producing for other acts. A “hits” collection dubbed The Best of the Rest was released in December 2020 featuring previously unreleased songs, demos, and remixes.
