Aug. 11 — Independent hardcore emo punk outfit Phantom Bay debuted another single from its forthcoming EP last month, along with the song’s companion video.

The band premiered its new single, ‘Airtight‘ and the song’s companion video late last month. The song is the second single from the band’s forthcoming EP, Underground, which is scheduled for release Sept. 8 through Krod Records. The band debuted the album’s lead single, ‘Collective Decline’ early last month through online outlet, Visions.

The musical arrangement featured in Phantom Bay’s new single is a notable change of sound and style from that in ‘Collective Decline’. Where that song is more of a screamo /eco type composition, the new single leans more in the way of a melodic hardcore punk style arrangement. The vocals are more distinctively screamed here than sung, unlike in the previous single. The instrumentation is “sharper” and more directed than in its predecessor, too. The contrast in sound and style is certain to engage a wide range of listeners.

The lyrical theme featured in the new single is a commentary about consumerism. Phantom Bay member Mark Schulz, who shot and directed the single’s companion video, discussed that theme as it applies to the video.

“The video deals with everyday consumption, in particular how we tend to justify our own, often unhealthy consumption patterns and talk ourselves out of criticism,” Schulaz said. “We buy so much stuff we don’t need, don’t care where things come from and who we’re supporting silently. The song and video is a call to think more before you make a purchase.”

The video in question features footage of people buying various products. Its main character wears a bag, of sorts, on his head made of “poppers” to essentially insulate and protect himself. The visualization is meant to help illustrate the message of how we justify our own consumerism, blocking out what others think of it.
