Sept. 6 — A New York City business will be re-dedicated this week in honor of the Beastie Boys.
Beastie Boys Square, the site of Paul’s Boutique — which served as the cover art for the group’s landmark sophomore album Paul’s Boutique — will be re-dedicated at a special two-hour ceremony that kicks off at noon ET. Surviving Beatie Boys members Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Adrock) will be in attendance for the ceremony along with New York City Council member Chris Marte.
Paul’s Boutique is located at the corner of Ludlow and Essex Streets. The re-dedication is also part of the nation’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the creation of hip-hop.
The re-dedication is only one way in which the Beastie Boys is being recognized. Beastie Boys Story, an original Apple Films presentation, will premiere later Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. at the IFC Center in Greenwhich Village. The film was directed by famed cinematographer and director Spike Jonez.
SiriusXM re-launched its exclusive Beastie Boys channel Thursday as part of the ongoing celebration of the trio. The channel is located on Channel 105.
The trio’s 1998 album Hello Nasty is available again now on a 4LP deluxe vinyl through Capitol Records, which is a division of Universal Music Group. Originally released July 14, 1998 through Capitol Records, the
deluxe pressing was originally released in 2009 and featured 21 bonus tracks as well as a coffee table book to add to the re-issue’s appeal. Since that initial re-issue, it has been out of print, making September the first time that the album will have been re-issued since then.
Hello Nasty produced four singles, ‘Intergalactic,’ ‘Body Movin’,’ ‘The Negotiation Limerick File,’ and ‘Remote Control/Three MCs and One DJ.’ It earned the trio two Grammys and an MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, the album would go on to sell seven million copies worldwide.
