March 10 — Veteran prog-rock band Yes is scheduled to release its latest album this spring.
Mirror to the Sky, the band’s 23rd album, is scheduled for release May 19 through InsideOut Music/Sony Music. In anticipation of the album’s release, the band premiered the album’s lead single, ‘Cut From The Stars‘ and its companion lyric video Friday.
The musical arrangement featured in ‘Cut From The Stars’ is a catchy familiar prog-rock opus from the band. The funky bass line and string arrangement that open the song pair well with the layered vocal approach to immediately take audiences back to another era of pro-rock. The incorporation of the keyboard line here adds even more to that sense. The whole lends itself to comparison to not only older works from the band, but from the likes of Rush and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme, but the lyrics presented in the video hint at a matter of existentialism. This is hinted through the chorus, which states in part, “Relate/Reach out/Fathom what life is all about/Each atom cut from the stars/In the light of pure perfection/Troubles are so very small.” It makes a person kind of look back at themselves and their situations and their place in the universe, and gain a different sense of perception of things. That is just this critic’s interpretation.
The lyric video that accompanies the new single features the song’s lyrics over various images, such as the James Webb Telescope, the aurora borealis, and the Milky Way galaxy.
