July 9 — A month after premiering what was at the time, its first new music in five years, As I Lay Dying has unveiled that single’s follow-up.
The band debuted its new single, ‘The Cave We Fear To Enter‘ and the song’s companion video Tuesday. The song’s debut came a month after the group premiered its then latest single, ‘Burden.’
In regard to its musical arrangement, ‘The Cave We Fear To Enter’ is more melodic than its predecessor. Where ‘Burden’ was a full-on metalcore composition, this song also bears more leanings toward death and black metal than the metalcore approach taken to its predecessor. This even though this song is seemingly meant to be a continuation of sorts of ‘Burden.’
According to a prepared statement from front man Tim Lambesis, the song’s lyrical theme was developed by bassist Ryan Neff, saying, “Ryan chose words that he felt represented what he had been processing leading up to the demo. It felt right for me to leave that therapeutic expression in place.”
Neff does not offer an explanation behind the song’s lyrical content in the news release announcing the premiere of the new single and video. Lyrics are not provided with the video, either, leaving interpretation of the song’s lyrical theme up to listeners.
The video for the new single puts each member of the band in a different setting (e.g. a dark forest, a cave, a snowy mountaintop, a beach front) as the song plays over each musician performing his part to the song.
