Sesame Street is making the jump from the small screen to the printed page in a new comic book series.
Sesame Workshop and Oni Press have partnered to launch the new four-issue series. The announcement was made Friday through a news release. The series is set to debut Aug. 28 with the first issue, Grover Lends a Hand.
Written by Joey Esposito (Batman: The Brave and the Bold), and drawn by artist Austin Baechle (Rick and Morty: The Coloring Book), the debut issue centers on everyone’s favorite blue, furry friend from Sesame Street. Grover learns as he wakes up that his fellow friends have their own problems to solve, leaving Grover to help.
Big Bird has one of the problems. He wants to build a new bookshelf but he is having trouble understanding the instructions, so it’s up to Grover to help him. Next he has to help Oscar write clues for Slimey’s birthday scavenger hunt. Yes, even Slimey, that cute, loveable little worm, makes an appearance.
The Count and Elmo each have their own problems to solve along the way, too. As if all of that was not enough, audiences also get cameo guest appearances from some beloved classic characters, such as Bert, Ernie, and Barkley (who has sadly not been seen on Sesame Street on television in ages) alongside the more modern addition to “the street,” Abby Cadabra.
The debut issue of Sesame Street will have two variant covers, designed respectively by Austin Baechle and JUSTASUTA. Erin Hunting and Austin Baechle designed the debut issue’s two primary covers.
